Teaching is a broad term which covers the many different ways in which adults help young children learn. Adults must have very high expectations of themselves and all children.  Using their expert knowledge of the areas of learning and a clear understanding of how children learn they can provide rich, varied and imaginative experiences for children.

Teaching includes:

  • Positive interactions with children during planned and child-initiated play and activities.
  • Taking account of the enabling learning environment including the structure and routines of the day that establishes expectations.
  • Assessment of what every child knows, understands and can do, including taking into account children’s interests and dispositions to learning (characteristics of effective learning).
  • Using this information to plan the next steps for learning and ensuring all children make good progress relative to their starting points (the observation, assessment and planning cycle).
