Step by Step - Becoming a Childminder

  1. Book on to an Ofsted Briefing Session - This session is completely free and will explain what will be covered in the Introduction to Childminding Course (ICC). The session will also cover the day to day routine of a childminder.

  2. Once you have attended the Ofsted Briefing Session you will be able to register for the ICC course.

  3. In order to register with Ofsted, there are additional requirements so while you're on the course it is recommended that you:  
    Apply to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)
    Partners or anyone over 16 living at the address will need to apply for a different kind of DBS check
    Complete a Paediatric First Aid Course
    Purchase Public Liability Insurance
    Complete a Level 2 Food Hygiene Course
    Complete a GP Health Declaration

  4. Once you have completed the course and all the additional requirements, you will be able to apply to become a registered childminder with Ofsted


  5. As soon as you have completed and submitted your application to Ofsted, you can request a "Pre-Ofsted Visit" from the Early Years Service. In this visit, a member of our team will meet you in your home and ensure you and your home is ready for when Ofsted perform a registration visit.
